THE CONSTANT NIBBLING OF SMALL RICH CONFECTIONS
by Tari Gwaemir
On Count D's sweet tooth.
Light, paper-thin pastry shells filled with red bean and honey. Chocolate eclairs covered with whipped cream puffs. Small crumb cakes topped with brown sugar and filled with almond cream. Strawberry fudge squares layered with dark chocolate and sprinkled with cocoa. Lady's fingers soaked in liquor and dipped in vanilla mousse. Blackberry tarts with marscapone cream and buttery crusts.
"Delightful," D exclaimed as he delicately wiped his mouth on a silk napkin. "Are you sure you won't have some, Detective?"
Leon looked nauseous. "I think if I smell any more sugar, I'm going to hurl."
"Please, not on the couch. The lavatory is down the hall." D reached for the next dessert--a dish filled with bite-sized meringues--and gave a contented sigh before taking a bite.
